eight cats & one small dog

it’s as night as night gets.
eight cats and a small dog
scatter when I park on the side street.
I kill my headlights and
they drift back to the potholes
that are their home. for a moment
I wonder if there is a way
to share my can of beer with them.

and to think that just a while ago
I was driving through the color black!
passing the last gasps of roadkill!
running over gusts of wind!
finally coming to this small side street,
to park, and watch eight cats and a dog
look at me one by one, and then all at once.
it’s impossible for them to understand
how far I’ve been.
